For organic produce a formal legislation is not into place in the EU. The EU is working on a formal legislation but until today it is not official. Nevertheless the rules are similar for organic products in different countries around the EU. In Western European countries the most commonly applied rules are those of BNN (Bundesverband Naturkost Naturwaren).
Regulation (EC) No 889/2008 gives some guidelines about the use of plant protection products and a number of products that are allowed in organic farming.
For contaminants, no specific rules are set, but the limits for conventional farming may never be exceeded.
