Fosetyl and phosphonic acid analysis. Method: FAL_01_A

Primoris has updated its fosetyl analysis method to be able to distinguish between Fosetyl and phosphonic acid.

Fosetyl aluminium

What is it?

Organic phosphate compound used as a systemic fungicide with protective activity. It is rapidly absorbed through the plant leaves or roots, with translocation both up and down inside the plant.

How does it work (mode of action)?

Fosetyl aluminum is a systemic fungicide that acts by inhibiting spore germination and penetration into the plant, and by blocking mycelial growth and spore production. Also has a useful activity against several bacterial plant pathogens.

Legislation

The current residue definition established in Regulation (EC) N°396/2005 for Fosetyl-Al comprises the sum of Fosetyl, phosphonic acid and their salts, expressed as Fosetyl.

Currently MRL’s are set based on Regulation N°991/2014. These MRL’s are applicable until 31 December 2015. After that date, the MRL of 2ppm will be applicable again for some products unless modified by a regulation.

Phosphonic acid can be detected after the use of fosetyl and/or the use of phosphonates. The EU commission has decided that no clear fertilizing effect for phosphonates can be demonstrated and thus inclusion in Reg. 2003/2003 is not possible. Both fosetyl and phosphonates are considered as pesticides and authorization under Reg. 1107/2009 is required. For both of them, the residue definition of Regulation (EC) N°396/2005 is applicable and recalculation to the MRL of fosetyl-Al is applied (independent of the origin of the found products).
